Breast cancer screening in Vanadzor
Armenia has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the world. The disparity of survival rate of 34% from overall cancer patients is a devastating fact that needs urgent attention. Breast Cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Armenia. Up to 60% of diagnosed breast cancers are at stage 3 or 4, most with fatal outcomes. The biggest contributing factor to such high mortality rates is due to late diagnosis. Meduni’s mission is to improve the healthcare system in Armenia with a predominant focus on pediatric and adult oncology. Since 2016 Meduni implemented 21 projects, equipped 34 hospitals, assisted 104 families, and helped to save 45 children battling cancer.
Under the auspices of Board Director Dr. Armen Aboulian, in collaboration with Vanadzor Medical Center, and with the generous contributions of our donors we aim to implement a Breast Cancer Screening Program in Vanadzor to save thousands of lives of local women. Within the scope of this project, we aim to detect breast cancer in its early stages while it is still treatable. We plan to purchase a mammography machine, train surgeons and radiologists, educate the public, and develop a sustainable program that can be replicated and used all over Armenia. The program will improve breast cancer care in the region and create convenience and opportunity to serve nearly 442,000 people from the provinces of Lori, Tavush, and Djavakhk. The amount raised via fundraising events will directly fund the project's needs.
